What is the difference between LiFePO4 battery and lithium battery?
2024-05-10
There are some significant differences in chemical structure and performance between lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4 batteries) and general lithium-ion batteries.
Here are their main differences:
1.Cathode material:
- The cathode material of LiFePO4 battery is lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4), hence the name. This material is relatively stable, has good thermal stability and safety.
- General lithium-ion batteries (such as lithium manganate, lithium cobalt oxide, lithium nickel cobalt manganate, etc.) use other compounds as positive electrode materials, such as cobalt, manganese or nickel oxides.
2.Battery voltage:
- The voltage of LiFePO4 batteries is usually 3.2 volts (single cell).
- The voltage of a typical lithium-ion battery is usually between 3.6 and 3.7 volts (single cell).

3. Energy density:
- Generally speaking, the energy density of LiFePO4 batteries is relatively low, which means less energy can be stored in the same volume or weight.
- General lithium-ion batteries usually have higher energy density and can store more energy.
4.Cycle life:
- LiFePO4 batteries generally have longer cycle life and can undergo more charge and discharge cycles, often thousands or more.
- Typical lithium-ion batteries can have a short cycle life, typically between a few hundred to a few thousand cycles.
5. Security:
- LiFePO4 batteries are generally considered safer than ordinary lithium-ion batteries due to the stability of their cathode materials, and are less prone to safety issues such as overheating, fire or explosion.
In general, LiFePO4 batteries are usually used in applications that require higher safety and cycle life, such as electric vehicles, energy storage systems, etc.
General lithium-ion batteries are more common in portable electronic products, power tools and other fields. They have higher energy density, but may be slightly inferior in safety and cycle life.
